Some Highlights from the Week:

Honors Civil Engineering Water to Wilderness: Seniors designed structures that they walked from the beach to Hopkins Wilderness Park and spent the night in/on them!

Counselors organized various Mental Health Awareness Month lunch activities including yoga led by Dr. Taube and a dance party.

Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Swelebration potluck!

Advanced Physics students built baryons and mesons using quark puzzle pieces.

9th grade Physics students culminated their project by inviting staff, families, and community members to the Beats by DVS Museum to showcase headphones they designed and built.

Leadership culminated their seminar time together with an End of the Year Celebration and recognized Senior Buddies who mentored underclassmen throughout the year.

10th grade Chemistry students finished out their coffee unit with the DV Baristas event. We hope everyone enjoyed their freshly brewed coffee!

Week 36 Schedule

We are heading into the last week of instruction before POL week! Time does fly by when you’re having fun. I’m sure the Senior families felt that way as we celebrated Senior Awards Night last night. Our amazing photographer, Stacee Lianna, captured some fantastic moments; photos can be found and downloaded at no cost for DV families at Stacee’s SmugMug Gallery.

This week will be the last week of seminars. We hope all students enjoyed their seminars. Students will be busy this week finishing their projects, finals, and assignments. There are a few opportunities for families to visit campus this week to enjoy some final projects. We encourage all students to finish the year with excellence.

As we approach Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember all those who have sacrificed in service to our country. In honor of Memorial Day, we will have no school on Monday, 5/26.

Course Selection for 2025-2026 School Year: Here is a list of 25-26 courses and the DVS Course Catalog (some courses subject to change based on enrollment). This Course Request Form (Da Vinci account required) was posted on Canvas and is due on Friday, May 30th, 2025.
Presentations of Learning: Presentations of Learning (POLs) for all students will take place during Weeks 37 and 38 (6/3-6/10).

- When not presenting or watching presentations during POL week, students will be augmenting their learning in Extended Learning Rooms with guest speakers and workshops. More info to come, but students will not want to miss out on some great, FREE college and career preparation opportunities!
College Essay Workshops for Juniors: We are excited to offer support to juniors in their personal statement and PIQ writing process through our partnership with Collegewise. We will offer a series of free workshops for you to work on your college essays:
POL Extended Learning Room: Juniors will attend two workshops where they will learn tips and tricks for mastering the art of college essay writing. You will leave the workshop with an essay outline. No sign-up needed as all juniors will be scheduled into an Extended Learning Room during POL Week.
Summer Essay Writing Workshop: Want to take your college essay to the next level? Join Collegewise experts to deep dive into how to make your essay stand out. You will gain further insight and feedback on your essay. Two dates available, you may register for one date below:

9th Grade Beats by DVS Museum: Physicists have been working hard prototyping their headphones and designing brochures to explain sound waves, where sound comes from, and sound phenomena. They would love for you to attend our Beats by DVS Museum on Tuesday, May 27th (P1 9:00-10:00 & P3 10:45-11:45) and Wednesday, May 28th (P2 9:00-10:00 & P4 10:45-11:45). We will be in the DVS Forum near the student bathrooms. This event is open to the community and will be gallery-walk style. Stay as long as you’d like. We hope to see you there!
10th Grade Da Vinci Baristas Coffee Brewing Competition: If you love coffee, or are willing to give it a try once again, please join our Da Vinci Baristas Coffee Brewing Competition! Families are invited to be coffee tasters as sophomores use their Chemistry knowledge to brew you the perfect cup. The competition will occur during the school day on Tuesday, May 27 (Period 3 10:55-11:40, Period 5 1:45-2:30) and Wednesday, May 28 (2 9:15-10:00, Period 4 10:55-11:40) in Brooke’s room. Please ask your student what period they have Chemistry to make sure you’re able to be a coffee taster during their class.
12th Grade Medical Interventions Biomimicry Symposium: Join us for our Second Annual Biomimicry Symposium! The Medical Interventions course partnered with Cal Poly SLO’s Biomedical Engineering Department and challenged the seniors this year to design a nature-inspired solution to a problem in the world. You are invited to see the prototypes and posters and vote on the best designs you see amongst the group’s designs, next week on Thursday 5/29 during Period 1 (9:30-10:20) and Period 5 (1:50-2:50) in the Forum.

We are heading into Week 35! Week 38 is the last week of school, and the end of the school year is fast approaching. The Seniors are enjoying their last few weeks as DVS students before they become DVS Alumni! We had a fun Senior Week with events such as dress like a senior citizen, word challenges, and Soak a Senior during lunch. Meanwhile, the Freshmen class enjoyed more team-building with Fulcrum and are experiencing how quickly the high school years can go by.

We hope that all students continue to finish the year strong with only two weeks left until POL week!

Course Selection for 2025-2026 School Year: Students heard about the course selection process and options for next school year’s classes in their English classes this week. Week 34 Schedule

What an eventful week last week! After much preparation and anticipation, Da Vinci Science completed the WASC visit last week. WASC committee members spent time with all stakeholders, including the Da Vinci Board, Central Office, parents, students, alumni, teachers, and staff. They spent the week observing our school and getting to know all that occurs in our school daily. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive and members shared comments such as, “students were so engaged in their learning,” “students were so respectful of all their teachers,” “such a supportive parent community,” and “kids are getting learning experiences we haven’t seen at other schools.” A heartfelt thank you to all of our students, families, and community members for all the support and hard work to make our school the best it can be for our students. We are very grateful and proud of the work we do here at DVS, and we couldn’t do it without your support.

Thank you, students and families, for a beautiful Teacher Appreciation Week! Teachers and Staff felt all the love and appreciation and received delicious meals, coffee, snacks, treats, notes, and gifts throughout the week. Thank you for your generosity, thoughtfulness, and time in making our teachers and staff feel special.

With less than five weeks of school left and three weeks of instruction before POL week, we encourage students to finish the semester strong and to keep striving for excellence.

DVS also wants to wish our special, loving, hard-working, amazing, wonderful moms out there a very Happy Mother’s Day!

Technology Reminder: It was brought to our attention this week that a concerning Tik Tok trend that encourages students to tamper with devices is circulating. Please remind students that any attempts to tamper with school technology or bypass restrictions (such as filters, network settings, or device configurations) are strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary action. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and secure learning environment.
11th Grade CHYA Refresh Presentations: Dr. Emily Green and Nurse Titsyana Lucero will be presenting a refresh of the health & sexual education curriculum (“CHYA”, or “California Healthy Youth Act”) during 11th grade biology classes Monday-Wednesday, May 12th-14th. Week 33 Schedule

This week is Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week! We want to take a moment to acknowledge all of the love, care, and amazing learning experiences DVS teachers and staff work hard to provide for all of our students. Thank you, DVS Teachers and staff! Thank you, families and students, for making our teachers and staff feel appreciated this week!

Last week was another packed week: SBAC Testing, dissections in science labs, field trips for career-connected learning, AAPI CD, Decision Day, and Prom… to name a few! This coming week is another pivotal week for DVS. We have our WASC accreditation review this week, during which WASC visitors will observe our school and interview stakeholders to understand better and verify all we do here at DVS. Thank you for your continued support.

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week: Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is HERE, and the DVS Parent Association needs your help celebrating them ** Sign up and donate by Tues May 6 ** SIGN UP HERE! If you’re unable to bring items onto campus, no worries! We can use Costco or Target e-gift cards sent to DVSappreciation@gmail.com. Notes of appreciation can be dropped off at the DVS front office all week. Thank you to all families who have already contributed to making our teachers feel special. Here are some additional ideas for students to show their appreciation:
- Monday – Message of Thanks: Write a thoughtful note or thank-you card to one (or more!) of your teachers. A few kind words go a long way!
- Tuesday – Say It Out Loud: Share words of affirmation. Tell your teachers what you appreciate most about them — don’t hold back the love!
- Wednesday – Flower Power: Bring in a flower (real, handmade, or even drawn!) to brighten your teacher’s day.
- Thursday – Tasty Treats: Surprise your teachers with something sweet or delicious. Homemade or store-bought — it’s the thought that counts!
- Friday – Final Touch Friday: Consider giving a small gift or a gift card as a token of appreciation (only if it’s appropriate and possible for you).
Grade Updates: Staff update grades on PD days so grades are up-to-date by the Tuesday of the following week. Tuesday, 5/6 will be the last grade update of the semester before final report cards. All coursework and grading information will continue to be through Canvas.

PJ Test Prep is a small, boutique SAT/ACT prep and tutoring company based here in the South Bay and West LA that has been providing support to DVS students during Test Prep Seminar for several years.
